Associate Professor, School of Environmental and Forest Sciences, Associate Director, Center for International Trade in Forest Products
Indroneil Ganguly

Indroneil Ganguly is an Associate Professor in the School of Environmental and Forest Sciences (SEFS) and Associate Director of the Center for International Trade in Forest Products (CINTRAFOR). In April 2013, Dr. Ganguly joined the ranks of Faculty at SEFS with a dual appointment in SEFS and the CINTRAFOR. In May 2015, he was appointed as the Associate Director of CINTRAFOR. Dr. Ganguly’s research focuses on natural climate solutions and the synergic role between the wood products industry, trade, and regional forestry practices.

Dr. Ganguly received his Ph. D degree in forestry and international trade from the UW-SEFS. He also received a graduate diploma in International Development Policy & Management from UW’s Daniel J. Evans School of Public Affairs, and a Master’s degree equivalent in business management (MBA) from India. His academic training in forestry, interdisciplinary research experience in the global wood products industry, and disciplinary teaching experience in environmental economics, forestry, biostatistics, and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) provide him with the necessary skills and knowledge base to successfully lead and mentor research and teaching at the CINTRAFOR and UW-SEFS.

Research and Collaboration:

Dr. Ganguly’s research currently focuses on several topics of high importance: (1) the effects of legislation and environmental certification programs on the international forest products market; (2) improvements to the life cycle assessment of engineered wood products and wood-based biofuels; (3) critical evaluation of environmental building programs; and (4) climate smart forestry.

Dr. Ganguly has published over 60 peer-reviewed research articles, and his research has led to various important state-level policies. His research on cross-laminated timber (CLT) was cited in the Seattle Times Sunday Edition as a cover story. His CLT building environmental assessment work was featured in multiple news outlets, including Public Radio International and other news outlets. Forbes has interviewed him, and his research was featured in their magazine.

As the Associate Director of CINTRAFOR, collaboration and outreach play an important role in Dr. Ganguly’s work portfolio. Over the years, Dr. Ganguly has collaborated with environmental NGOs, research institutes, industry associations, and governmental research labs. A list of organizations Dr. Ganguly collaborated with is provided below:

Teaching

Dr. Ganguly has over 12 years of teaching experience at UW alone; he has taught courses to both undergraduate and graduate students. As an instructor, Dr. Ganguly focuses on helping students master the competencies and skills required to successfully meet workplace and life challenges. He has taught courses in biostatistics and environmental economics; however, his current teaching focus is Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of bio-based materials and the economics of international forestry. A list of courses taught is provided below.

As a graduate research advisor, Dr. Ganguly has successfully mentored as the primary research supervisor, graduated a total of twelve graduate students (MS and PhD levels), and many undergraduate students. A list of the graduate students supervised is provided below:

Courses taught include:

  1. ESRM/BSE 475 – Life Cycle Assessment: Fundamentals and Bio-Based Applications
